TPI set to realise potential as approved Poppy Processor

Release date: 09 August 2007

TPI is now licensed to grow 1,000 hectares of poppies for the 2007 Growing Season after securing orders to supply NRM for the next three years, with a 10-year Exclusivity Agreement for Supply.

TPI Enterprises Ltd is pleased to announce that the Tasmanian Government has granted it a Manufacturing Licence and approval to now grow 1000 hectares of papaver somniferum poppies.

The licence enables TPI to enter into contracts with Tasmanian farmers to grow up to 1000 hectares of the poppies.

TPI has now obtained the following required Commonwealth and State Licenses for 2007:

  • State Government of Tasmania Licence to Manufacture, Sell or Supply Scheduled Substances
  • Australian Federal Government Licence to Manufacture Narcotic Drugs
  • Australian Federal Government Licence to Export
  • Australian Federal Government Licence to Import

As with all current industry participants, TPI will need to apply for further licences and permits to enable manufacture in 2008.

After 4 years of significant investment and effort TPI is very pleased to receive this licence and look forward to being the only Australian owned poppy processor starting supply in 2008. We look forward to creating new jobs and commercialising innovation in Tasmania.

This year, TPI is offering a price increase of 25% compared to last year’s morphine price paid.

We recognise the government’s determination to protect the strong international reputation of the industry, and we value highly the constructive dialogue and support we have received from both the Tasmanian Government and its advisors. We also note the significant support we have received from the Federal Government and its business support agency, AusIndustry.

TPI is committed to the Tasmanian Poppy Industry and is very optimistic about its future in world markets. It is our aim to return the industry to high levels of production and profitability.
